The Battle for the Ugly Trophy XXIV | |||||||
The Battle for the Ugly Trophy was the AWAGA's first original club tournament, played in April, 2000 at Sunol Golf Course. The wet and wintry conditions made for a miserable day of golf, but the field survived to celebrate the winner after the last golfers had finished. What everyone discovered was that the top prize for the event was a simple wood base with a golfer on top, and it went to Jeff Applegate for his low Callaway score. Returning with his own little addition to the trophy to commemorate his victory, Jeff went out and won it again. Again he added his own little touch and then vowed the next year that he would quit the club if he won the damn thing a 3rd time. No worries. Dave Espinoza collared the trophy in 2002, and the award has been happily changing hands every year since then, growing in stature as well as ugliness. Mike Simonds doubled up on his good fortune in 2012, surviving the truly ugly weather to repeat his 2011 triumph. The format changed to Peoria Scoring in 2006. Six holes are randomly selected - unknown to the players - and those six holes (1 par three, 4 par fours, and 1 par five) determine each player's handicap for the round. Low net score wins the day. So, regardless of your real handicap, how you play - good or bad - could make you the next recipient of the Ugly Trophy! With his 2018 victory, Greg Brown became the first three-time winner of this event, and he couldn't have been prouder, uh, shocked, or rather, bewildered at the prospect of holding this beautiful monument to AWA Golf for a another year. Ethan Aldrich won the damn thing in 2023, and he will be on hand to return the Ugly Trophy -- complete with his little addition -- for whomever takes the prize in 2024. Contact Greg Brown at GBrown26@aol.com for entry confirmation. The more entries we have, the better the odds that Greg won't win it for a fourth time. |
