Dan Degnon Memorial AWAGA Club Championship |
The first AWAGA Club Championship was held in 2004 at Seascape Golf Club when Ed Davis beat out the field to claim his place as #1 in the club. This event celebrates individual effort, but in keeping with the philosophy of the club, this is a handicapped event. So anyone, regardless of skill level, can walk away with the top prize. That has been evident as eight past champions, including 2020 Club Champ Jeff Acuna, carried handicaps of over 20 strokes. In 2022 we returned for our third visit to Santa Teresa Golf Club, our unofficial home course. Kevin Hager grabbed the crown of Club Champion even though he did not win the event. That's because Bob Schneider, a non-member, snagged the low net score. But Bob got his place prize money and Kevin got the championship belt and the trophy.
The low handicap score wins the Club Championship. The low gross score will be recognized with the President's Cup. Which means someone will buy you a beer. Probably not me.
This most important event of the AWAGA season was re-named the Dan Degnon Memorial AWAGA Club Championship to honor our good friend Dan Degnon, who passed away much too soon from complications from a heart transplant. We always knew there was no heart big enough to replace the one he already had. Dan was the designer of the AWAGA logo and one of the Club's biggest supporters.
