Tony was perhaps the most exciting player ever to wear an AWA uniform. Standing all of 5'6", "Tony Tiger" had exceptional quickness and strength which served him well during his AWA career. He wasn't a natural ballplayer, but he made up for his lack of softball skills with sheer athleticism. Tony thrilled us as much for the acrobatic plays he didn't make as for those he did. And he made plenty of memorable plays. Tony was also the king of style on the field -- he wore his cap backwards long before that look became popular. A two-time MVP and batting champ, Tony fell victim to reoccurring leg injuries that left him in great discomfort his last two seasons. After a short and frustrating try for a comeback in 1979, Tony limped off the field for good, never to return. His flame was short, but it burned very brightly while he was here. Tony has been MIA from the bosom of AWA for many years now, and we'd love to know his whereabouts. Tony, come out come out wherever you are. |
