Pat played the now relic position of buckshort in AWA's early years. Effective because of his anticipation and quickness cutting off the ball, not to mention a very strong throwing arm, Pat sometimes frustrated the opposition when, with a runner on first, he would turn a would-be hit to center into a force out at second. It finally took Pat's retirement in 1979 for AWA to switch to the more traditional four outfield alignment. Always vocal in the dugout, Pat could be counted on to scold the troops for poor play just before grounding into a double play to end the game. Well, actually, that only happened once, but we never let him forget it. Pat was an excellent athlete who never did get the hang of hitting a lob pitch, but he was an intergral part of AWA's success in the 70s. When he retired from the team Pat moved to Seattle to make a boatload of money. |
