Maytheni Allen
First we had to figure out how to spell his first name, then we had to figure out where to put our exuberant and athletic rookie from the east coast. He never really played the game in his youth, and so his play in the outfield was adventurous, to say the least. But there was no doubting Maytheni's effect on the offense, where his explosive speed and power made him a serious presence in the heart of the lineup. In the 1999 summer playoffs, Maytheni knocked in seven runs and crushed a seventh inning grand slam that nearly lifted AWA to victory. In the team's final season of 2000, Maytheni stepped into the cleanup spot and solidified himself as a hitter, capturing the team home run crown and being named the winner of the Silver Bat Award. The young man who had been weaned on New England ice hockey sometimes found handling a softball a difficult challenge, but there was no doubting his ability to hit one.
