Dennis is among the most memorable of all the old time AWA players. The stories are numerous, and his baserunning exploits are legendary, but his best remembered moment in AWA lore came in the 1975 season opener -- AWA's very first game -- when "Boomer" struck out swinging three times in three at bats. He took the defense out of the position of catcher, and there were few sights as colorful as watching Dennis chase after a ball that was rattling around the backstop. The team's most revered (and most feared) post season award is the "Boomer" Hawkins Award, which was given annually to the team leader in strikeouts. What a legacy! |
