When Buddy settled into the AWA lineup as the team's regular catcher in 1999, he had the unenviable job of taking over a position that previously belonged to Coach Apple. Fortunately, after tweaking Buddy's catching style ("Don't catch it in the air!"), the Coach approved. It didn't hurt that Buddy also wielded a strong bat that netted him a .508 batting average with eight extra base hits in his first season. Buddy was the one guy among the newcomers who completely embraced the concept of AWA softball, its history and traditions. Always talking it up, and a needler of player and umpire alike, Buddy became one of the team's most visible and popular members. Every game was a reason to have some fun, and Buddy lived it up during his short time with AWA. |
